The results of the survey conducted on the pig population of South Africa for certain diseases, including Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), show that South Africa is free from PRRS. South Africa intends maintaining its PRRS free status and restricting imports of raw and semi-processed pork and pork products from coutnries not free from PRRS unless the product is destined for direct processing in South Africa. Pork products processed to ensure the inactivation of the virus will be allowed, as well as those mentioned on the list of products considered to pose negligible risk according to currently available reviewed information. South Africa will review this list as more scientific information about the potential risk of other types of pig products becomes available. Raw pork will only be imported from countries that South Africa regards free of the PRRS virus or from certified PRRS free compartments, unless the product is destined for direct processing in South Africa or appears on the list.
