In Burkina Faso, there is a legal vacuum regarding plant health protection. For many years, phytosanitary systems have been based on international rules (International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), African Union Inter-African Phytosanitary Council (AU-IAPSC), Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS), etc.). Yet these rules have not been integrated into the national legal system. The new Law not only addresses these needs and gaps, but also acts as an effective instrument for durable agricultural and economic development.It establishes standards and practices arising from Burkina Faso's international phytosanitary obligations, and also lays down the foundations for a national organization for plant protection, while taking into account the principles of efficiency, modernity and openness of the national legal system.The notified Law regulates the health protection of plants, plant products and other regulated items, including products derived from modern biotechnology. The provisions of this Law apply to all activities and all aspects of health protection for plants, plant products and other related products.
